The aim of this dissertation is to analyze historical projects that intended to construct a readers community in Brazil from 1808 - the beginning of press in Brazil - until to 1945 - last year of Gustavo Capanema in the Education and Health Ministery of Brazil. Considering such aim, it is analyzed which type of reader was legitimated when it was asserted that it would be necessary to improve reading. It was also analyzed why it was considered evident the fact that there weren´t readers in Brazil. For this analysis, representations of readers, that is intentionalities and gestures of intellectuals, politicians, public managers, editors and other social actors, were researched in different texts, such as newspapers, legislative texts, besides literature, especially Machado de Assis, Lima Barreto and Graciliano Ramos´ novels.
Este trabalho tem como propósito analisar iniciativas que buscaram constituir, no Brasil, um público de leitores. Para realizá-lo foi necessário indagar que tipo de leitor se tinha em mente quando se afirmava, tendo como certa a escassez de leitores no país, a necessidade de criar mecanismos para incentivar a leitura. Tal indagação tornou imprescindível o exame de textos através dos quais pudessem ser depreendidas diferentes representações do leitor, evidenciadas nas intenções e gestos de gestores públicos, intelectuais, editores, políticos e outros personagens atuantes no período abordado - isto é, aquele que se inaugura com a chegada no Rio de Janeiro dos primeiros prelos, em 1808, e se estende até 1945, quando tem fim a gestão de Gustavo Capanema no Ministério da Educação e Saúde do governo de Getúlio Vargas, em 1945. Além de escritos de natureza jornalística e política, foram incluídos no corpus da dissertação textos ficcionais, dentre outros, romances de Machado de Assis, Lima Barreto e Graciliano Ramos. |
